PX3: I’m a winner! And a loser …
For the first time in my life, last January I entered a photo contest. I felt a little stupid entering the PX3 Photo Competition, because it attracts thousands of photographers from around the world each year. I didn’t think my work was worthy but I decided to give it a shot anyway. Four shots, actually:
In the “Fine art — abstract” category, I offered the stairs from the Galerie Véro-Dodat in Paris. I shot *lots* of frames of this rickety staircase last September, but this image was my favorite:
In the “Wildlife — other” category, I entered one of my favorite shots from Como Lake. I call this one “Zen Duck Butt:”
In the “Portraiture — wedding” category, I submitted “Le Mariage de Tiffany.” I have no idea who she is; I just happened to walk by as she stood there.
… and finally, I entered these still lifes (or would that be still lives?) that I shot as decoration for my sister’s guest bathroom. I titled this composite “One flower, two ways.”

Anyway … I’d honestly kind of forgotten about the contest, until I got an email last Friday:
Congratulations your entry 1-21581-11 has been chosen as a ” Px3 Official Selection for 2011″ competition. The jury’s final selection will be announced next week. Good luck.
… and then I got another email last night:
I am writing to congratulate you on winning an award in this year’s Prix de la Photographie competition. Please see the attached PDF for more details!
I’m proud to say that Tiffany brought home the silver medal in the non-professional wedding portraiture category (scroll to the bottom of the winner’s page to take a look at the other entries), and that the Galerie Véro-Dodat stairs got the abstract fine-art bronze.
But don’t worry: I won’t let it go to my head. After all, I did have two winners—but I also had two losers!
A big thanks to the PX3 jurors. I’m both humbled and very honored.

The winning photo is breathtaking. However, “Zen Duck Butt” should’ve won something just for the title alone.
Ha ha! If *only* they gave awards for creative photo titles! Thanks so much for the smile, Lis!
Whey hey hey ! Go you !
Thank you, Hallysann! As I told my husband this morning, “Well … THAT was unexpected!”
Congrats again, Heather. You seem to be on a roll
Just beginner’s luck, I think. The same thing happens when I play pool: I kill during the first game and then I go into a downward spiral. Ha.
Great pictures…all of them. The one with the duck butt I love. I took a pic like that once. I think it just looked so cute. :0)
Gotta admit, the duck butt was my favorite, too. Great minds think alike …
Woohoo! Excellent! Massive congrats! See, you are a good photographer
Thanks for starting my day with a big smile. ::) (I’m wearing my glasses, there …)
Congratulations, that’s SO cool! You are a fantastically talented photographer and you thoroughly deserve to get some official recognition of the fact. I’m not surprised that Tiffany won you a prize. I love the abstract – it makes me think of vertebrae – and the flower is breathtaking. But my money has to go to the duck. Perfectly composed and extremely funny. It would make a great poster.
Good for you!
Thanks a million, dancingbeastie. You’re a fantastically fine photographer yourself, so your kind words mean a lot to me. But I’m with you 100% on the duck butt: Of the 100,000 (estimated) frames I’ve shot, it’s still one of my favorites. I’ll drop you a note off-line to tell you how you can get a poster-sized version.
Thanks again … it always brightens my day to hear from you.
Congrats! Your pictures are wonderful.
Thanks so much, EvilPoet. Your kind words mean a lot, because you’re a very gifted photographer yourself …
Congratulations, Heather!
You’re on a winning streak. Way to go!!!!
Thanks so much! I hope my winning streak holds up through the lottery drawing tonight!
Of course, your photos are beautiful!!!
I’m not surprised. Those photos are amazing.
You are so kind. Thanks a million!
Mille fois bravo Heather, félicitation, congratulation !!!

Tu es la meilleur.
MO and his M3 from Paris.
No, but these photos are beautiful. I really like Mr. Duck butt…. Carry on!
8able ( http://8able.wordpress.com/ )
Bah ! Mais, je peut te dire la même chose !
Il fait beaucoup de plaisir de trouver un autre blogger qui parle français. Je te remercie beaucoup ton commentaire. Monsieur Canard: Carry on!
Hey, I was looking for more info about the competition you talk about… and found your blog! I am one of the winners in your same category. Isn’t it weird enough? And I submitted my “Orange petals” just a few hours before the deadline. I am as surprised as you are, i guess. Congrats on your picture, I really like it!
What a funny coincidence, indeed. Your image is stunning — I noticed it the other day when I logged in to see the results, and I was drawn to it like a bee to a flower. Congratulations on your PX3 win! And thanks so much for your comment!
Congratulations! Really nice photo, well deserved win!
Thanks so much!
