Yes I visited them a year ago and actually posted about it (link below). I wasn't sure ahead of time if I would enjoy the tight spaces, but once I started pretending I was Indiana Jones it became quite enjoyable. Maybe I should try this technique more often in life?

I remember pondering the duality of the stacks of ex-Parisians piled in front of me and the throngs of living ones running around above my head on the street level. It was a very cool experience and you feel just a bit different when you pop out of there; you have a new respect for the world under the city. http://wp.me/p1dHNL-1szWXd

Thanks, frye! :) Don't be *too* impressed about my blog post becoming a book: I basically self-published it through Blurb (www.blurb.com). The catacombs story is consistently one of my top hits, so I thought that maybe folks would enjoy "owning" it. But it's been a commercial flop (I think I've sold only one copy). Oh, well ... it was a good learning experience.

Have *you* been to the catacombs, by the way?

man let's see it had to have been about four years ago. I was much younger but the depressingly amazing gravity of both situations was not lost on me. I still think to this day that they are the two most emotion-filled places I have ever been. I could write forever about them but nothing would be able to describe what feelings were felt standing amongst the rows of white crosses or at the end of a 45 minute long walk of death. So much history, so much of it forgotton. Makes life seem kinda bleak and meaningless knowing that we'll just be a pile of bones in the dirt one day.

The catacombs and Normandy back-to-back? Dude! That's way too much heaviness for two days. (But you knew that already.) When did you go? I'd love to hear your take on both.

And yeah, I've seen the trailer for the craptacular movie they named "Catacombs." Poor Pink. I hope she didn't think it would be her big Hollywood break. So sad ...

I went to the catacombs and then the d-day beaches in consecutive days. Had nightmares for a full week.

You know they made a shitty scary movie that "takes place" in the catacombs. Can you guess the creative title that they gave it?

So sad about the recent vandalism in this fascinating, historic, eerie place. I will never understand vandalism, tho it, too, seems to be interlinked with human history. Very nicely done piece, Heather, and the photos are incredible.
